A senior opposition politician in Samoa believes the Police Commissioner should have been sacked not censured over the illegal importing of guns.

Samoa's cabinet decided late last week to ignore the recommendations from a Commission of Inquiry into the smuggling of firearms, that the Attorney General oversee a criminal investigation into two senior police staff.

The Police Commissioner, Papalii Lorenese Neru, and the captain of the police boat MV Nafanua, Logoitino Filipo, were found to be in breach of duty but will not face a criminal investigation.

The leader of the SDUP, Asiata Dr Saleimoa Va'ai, believes the most senior police officer in the country should have to behave impeccably.

"In my view any shadow of improper behaviour that is not even criminal he should, without going through any prosectutions, he should be terminated."

Asiata says the Cabinet decision to censure the Commissioner and demote the Captain of the police vessel carry the weapons is an indication of how the administration is politicised at every level.
