Pacific police to join forces with Asian counterparts to fight HIV/Aids

10:32 am on 7 February 2009

Pacific police commissioners and chiefs from the 21 regional islands are taking part in programmes to help in the fight against the spread of Aids.

The move follows a three day United Nations conference of 15 Asia Pacific countries focussing on how to boost cooperation between law enforcement and networks of people living with HIV, as well as marginalised and vulnerable communities.

HIV/AIDS human rights project manager with the New Zealand police, Janine Monahan, says breaking down social barriers is essential.

Ms Monahan says talking about sex and condoms can no longer be private because it is actually going to affect the police force in the Pacific region.
