A day of upsets at Wellington Rugby Sevens

10:28 am on 7 February 2009

It was a day of upsets on day One of the Wellington Rugby Sevens tournament, with New Zealand, Fiji and South Africa all losing to less fancied sides.

And last year's finalist, Samoa has been knocked out, despite winning two pool matches.

Megan Whelan was at Wellington's Westpac Stadium.

"New Zealand were beaten by Wales, but managed to bounce back against Niue and Australia and top their pool. But that means they'll face series leader South Africa, in the Quarter final, who had a shock loss to minnows, Kenya. Fiji top their pool, and will face England today in a quarter final. Samoa were knocked out by Fiji and will face France in the quarter of the bowl competition. Tonga finished third in their pool, while Niue finished fourth, and the Cooks bottom of theirs. All three will be competing today in the bowl."
