PNG mining company holds programme for women

In a bid to encourage more women to join its male-dominated workforce, the Tolukuma gold mine in Papua New Guinea has embarked on a programme to train women as heavy machinery operators.

Last July, several female applicants were screened and out of a shortlist of 15, just two local women were chosen for a three-month training course to operate the gold mine's surface loaders.

The National newspaper reports the Tolukuma Gold Mine manager, John Moore, saying the women had done quite well and he wanted to see more women join the workforce.

The Mine is the largest employer of locals in the Goilala district and is a nationally-owned company.
