Pressure mounting on Vanuatu government to stop issuing new bus and taxi licenses

Pressure is mounting on the Vanuatu government to stop issuing new bus and taxi licences in Port Vila.

The Port Vila Land Transport Association says it has received complaints from the public that there are currently too many buses and taxis on the roads.

The Association's President, Willie Wilson, says bus and taxi operators have also raised their fares because they are finding it difficult to make a profit.

"We have already applied to the minister concerned for a stop to issuing new permits for the next three years. We have not received anything back yet. We are still pursuing the situation."

Willie Wilson says the government is violating a law that restricts the number of bus and taxi licences issued, by allowing more than 500 buses and more than 200 taxis on the roads.
