CNMI eyes millions in federal funding through US stimulus package

4:38 pm on 16 February 2009

The Commonweath of the Northern Mariana Islands could get as much as 96 million US dollars in new federal funds directly from the 787 billion dollar economic stimulus package that the U.S. Senate passed on Friday night.

Delegate Gregorio Sablan has urged the Governor Benigno Fitial and other local officials to use the funds wisely and quickly.

The funds are meant to stimulate the CNMI economy immediately and help build a better economic future by funding schools, roads, water and sewer systems.

But Mr Sablan says the federal funds do not come without strings attached.

He said the CNMI government will have to put together applications for the funds, sometimes competing with other jurisdictions.
