Vanuatu weather office says tropical depression is weakening

11:30 am on 17 February 2009

The Vanuatu meteorological office says a tropical depression located near the island of Tanna is now moving away from the country.

The system is moving west-southwest at about 7 knots in the last six hours.

A senior forecaster at the met office, Fred Jockley, says the system is weakening and the potential for it to become a cyclone in the next 12 to 24 hours is very low.

But he says the system is now west of Tanna and he expects wind and rain associated from the depression to affect areas near there.

"Some parts of the central, and that includes the Shefa and probably Malampa, but most particularly for the Tafea group but it will be some experiencing some heavy rain and possible flooding too in the South particularly."
