Guest workers need to be monitored says American Samoa Judge

A court Judge in American Samoa says guest workers need to be better monitored.

Judge Elvis Patea says the canneries should have a protocol to track workers in the territory on guest worker permits.

The judge says these workers appear to be left to their own devices.

Judge Patea was commenting on the case of a Samoa Packing employee who was ordered to leave the territory last Thursday as part of his sentence for stealing cases of chicken.

The court found out that the defendant did not depart as instructed but was still in jail.

An immigration official said Samoa Packing was responsible for transportation costs, but the cannery revealed it wasn't aware the man had been arrested and charged.
