CMAG discussion on possible Fiji suspension questioned by local political party

12:16 pm on 4 March 2009

Fiji's General voters Party or GVP has voiced concern about tomorrow's meeting of Commonwealth Ministers Action Group, or CMAG, where the issue of Fiji's possible suspension will be discussed.

The party's spokesman, Fred Caine, questions how CMAG can be considering suspending Fiji from the Commonwealth on the eve of the President's Political Dialogue Forum, especially when the organisation is itself involved as a facilitator of the Forum.

Mr Caine believes the Commonwealth as a body shouldn't express any view that would undermine the role of the Commonwealth in the Forum.

He says that if CMAG goes ahead with the issue of Fiji's suspension at its next meeting, the GVP and other parties will petition the interim Prime Minister to remove the Commonwealth as facilitators to the Forum in protest against their actions.
