Niue Government still to finalise plans to relaunch Tourism Authority

The Government in Niue is still to finalise its plans to reinstate the Tourism Authority.

The Authority had assisted the Government with tourism policies but it was put into recess five years ago.

The government, elected in June last year, has placed a strong emphasis on the need to grow the country's tiny tourism industry.

Hima Douglas, the general manager of the island's only hotel, the Matavai Resort, says he's been told he has been appointed the chairperson of the Tourist Authority, but he says that hasn't been confirmed.

"I was advised that a new board, a new authority has been formed and I was to be the new chair of the board, that was a week or so ago and I haven't heard anything else."

Hima Douglas says he hopes to discuss the move with the Minister of Tourism, the Premier Toke Talagi, in the next few weeks.
