Pago Pago based Inter Island Airways plans to expand within the next six months with international flights to Tonga and Niue.

Inter Island currently serves American Samoa's domestic routes as well as providing flights to Samoa.

Barney Sene, the company's executive vice president says routes to Tonga and Niue are to be launched within the next six months.

He says the company is expecting sometime next month a 32-seater Dornier aircraft for this expansion and the aircraft could also be used for flights to and from Samoa, making the flight time on that route significantly shorter.

The current plan is for Tonga flights to operate four times a week with two flights to correspond with the arrival in Pago Pago of Hawaiian Airlines two-weekly flights.

Two flights a week are being planned for Niue.

Barney Sene says that by next year the company is targeting flights to Fiji and the Cook Islands with the plan to make American Samoa the hub in the Pacific.
