The United Nations and the Commonwealth have agreed to provide mediation support to Fiji's President's political dialogue forum as requested by Ratu Josefa Iloilo.

In a joint statement, the UN and Commonwealth said the dialogue represented a historic opportunity to place the country firmly back on the path of sustainable constitutional democracy.

The Fiji Times says the statement, jointly signed by Commonwealth deputy secretary general Mmasekgoa Masire-Mwamba and UN representative Lynn Pascoe, said the two organisations were ready to support the political dialogue process under a framework of agreed principles."

It said they two organisations propose to jointly appoint a mediator to lead a core mediation team which would comprise two senior advisers and supported by a small secretariat consisting of technical experts as required and support staff.
