Cook Islands buffeted by strong winds

9:57 am on 12 March 2009

The southern group of islands in the Cook Islands are feeling the effects of tropical cyclone Joni.

The latest report we have says Cyclone Joni is about 41 nautical miles west of Mangaia and about seventy two nautical miles eastsoutheast of Rarotonga.

The lead forecaster at the Cook Islands weather office, Kake Ioane, says there are reports of heavy rain in Mangaia.

He says weather warnings have been issued for a number of islands in the southern group.

"Like a, Manuae, Mauke, Mangaia and Aitutaki and people are aware really aware of the cyclone because we already issued a strong wind warning."

Joni is currently moving southwest at five knots and is expected to curve southwards in the next twelve to eighteen hours.
