NZ troops leave for Solomon Islands

11:50 am on 18 March 2009

Forty-four army troops, the bulk of them from the territorial force, left Whenuapai Air Base in Auckland this morning for a four-month deployment in Solomon Islands.

The contingent will replace soldiers already stationed there.

Major Richard Palmer, who is leading the group, says the soldiers will continue dealing with the aftermath of flooding in the region in January.

He says the civilian skills territorial force members bring often prove to be invaluable.
