There's shock in the Samoan community over a secret birth on a plane flying from Apia.

The baby was found in the plane's toilet after the flight from the Samoan capital arrived in Auckland yesterday morning.

The police say they weren't notified until more than ninety minutes after it touched down.

The police, who are investigating if the baby was abandoned, say they were delayed in speaking to the mother while she underwent surgery after the complicated birth.

A Samoan community leader, Faamatuainu Tino Pereira, says the local community is anxious about the pair's welfare.

And he says he's surprised the pregnant woman was allowed to board the plane.
