Sols union questions mining license

11:46 am on 24 March 2009

The Solomon Islands National Union of Workers is calling on the Director of Mines to explain why an alluvial gold mining license has been granted to what it says is a highly questionable firm, Phoenix International.

The General Secretary of the Solomon Islands National Union of Workers, Tony Kagovai, said the license was issued without the proper checks being done on the individuals involved.

Mr Kagovai said the union had done their own checking and it would appear that Phoenix International is headed by an individual whose full story is not really known in Solomon Islands.
