Cyclone Jasper, which has been sitting nearly 400 kilometres west of Noumea in New Caledonia has now been downgraded to a Category One Gale.

The weather system is expected to weaken further in the next 6 to 12 hours.

It is now on an westerly course and the Fiji Met service says it is expected to peter out in open sea.
