Fiji Media Council has concerns over Driti comments

11:54 am on 26 March 2009

The Fiji Media Council has expressed concern about Land Force Commander Colonel Pita Driti's comments made yesterday.

Colonel Driti lashed out at the media, saying they are 'biased' against the military in their reports.

But the Council's chairman, Daryl Tarte, told the Fiji Times, that no such grievances were raised by military representative Major Neumi Leweni at the council's meeting yesterday morning.

Mr Tarte says one would have thought that if Colonel Driti had a complaint he would have told Mr Leweni, who is also Deputy Secretary for Information.

He says he thought the interim Prime Minister said they uphold media freedom as provided in the Constitution.

Daryl Tarte also questions why Colonel Driti is talking about closing down the biggest media organisation Fiji.

Colonel Driti said the Fiji Times was "the most non-cooperative and biased news paper in the country" and "should be closed down immediately".

Meanwhile, Fiji Times editor-in-chief Netani Rika says the Colonel's attack of the newspaper is "unfortunate".
