A 57 year old man in Samoa has been sentenced to eleven and a half years in jail after being found guilty in the Supreme Court of raping his 14 year old step daughter.

He was also found guilty of an attempted rape charge but admitted to one count of having sex with a girl between 12 and 16 years of age.

The chief judge, Patu Falefatu Sapolu, in sentencing the accused, pointed out the increase in the number of sex cases involving fathers and their daughters.

He says the court would respond by imposing tougher jail terms on convicted sex offenders.

The presiding judge has also voiced concern that in the majority of cases the mothers of the sex crime victims have supported the defendants, rather than their child .
