Fiji Land Force commander calls for more media balance

5:39 pm on 26 March 2009

Fiji's Land Force Commander is calling for more balanced reportage from the country's media on military issues.

The call follows a statement released by Colonel Pita Driti in which he labels the Fiji Times "the most non-cooperative and biased news paper in the country" and calls for its immediate closure.

Colonel Driti says the Fiji Media Council has called for anyone with a grievance to air it through the media but he believes military grievances are either not reported or not reported fairly.

"There has been no sense of balance in their reporting. Just the simple process of exercising balance, that's all I need to see with their reporting. And every morning when we wake up there's always been something negative about the interim government or the RFMF and even now it's even worse, they're blaming us for these attacks"

Colonel Pita Driti says if the military was behind the attacks, on the homes and property of senior public figures, different weapons would have been used and more damage caused.
