No need for traffic lights on Savaii island, says Samoa MP

An opposition MP in Samoa, Levaopolo Talatonu, has called for a stop to the installation of traffic lights in Salelologa on Savaii island.

Levaopolo says there is no need for them because most of the country's 20,000 vehicles are on Upolu.

He says the 12,000 US dollar spent on their installation should have been used to lower boat fares for people living in Savaii instead.

But the Health Minister, Gatoloaifa'ana Amataga Alesana Gidlow, who switched on the first set of traffic lights on Savaii, says her party's slogan of things good and better for people living in Apia must also apply to people living in Savaii.
