More Indonesians police sent to Papua amid ongoing violence

Indonesian national police have deployed more paramilitary police to Papua province to counter a growing number of attacks.

The Jakarta Globe reports that 80 members of the elite Mobile Brigade have been dispatched to Puncak Jaya following a fatal attack on police in the district.

The attack, which left one police officer dead and six others injured when armed men ambushed a police convoy, is the latest in a wave of violent incidents since recent mass rallies by Papuans pushing for self-determination and boycotts of last week's legislative election.

There have now been 13 reported deaths in attacks across Papua this month, notwithstanding the eleven reported deaths from fighting between Indonesian military and alleged spearatists on the border with PNG last week.

Meanwhile security authorities, along with community and religious leaders, are holding meetings with regional police and military commanders at the Papua Military Command base in Jayapura to discuss a response to the growing tension in the province.
