Solomons PM cautions region against swift action over Fiji hiatus

12:13 pm on 17 April 2009

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikua, is calling on the Pacific Islands Forum not to rush into implementing sanctions against the Fiji military regime.

Dr Sikua says the regime's abrogation of the constitution and the enforcement of emergency regulations have developed a new uncertainty and this requires a profound but prompt reflection by regional leaders.

The Forum had earlier required Fiji to announce an election date for this year by May the 1st and since the constitution was dumped the Forum Chair has called for more immediate action.

But Dr Sikua says the Forum leaders should meet at the earliest possible time to develop a firm, pragmatic and workable approach.

He says he is committed to the upholding of democracy and is actively working with all leaders in the region to develop the appropriate response to the current circumstances in Fiji.
