Police in Samoa move to gain public confidence

6:46 pm on 23 April 2009

Samoa's Ministry of Police and Prisons is looking at improving their services in enforcing the law and maintaining public confidence in police work.

Public confidence in the force has waned because of the number of junior and senior police officers facing criminal offences.

A recent commission of inquiry found that the police commissioner, Papalii Lorenese Neru, had been involved in the smuggling of firearms from American Samoa.

However, the assistant police commissioner, Papalii Li'o, did not want to comment on the commissioner's case but instead points out the recruitment of new officers is another area that needs to be looked at.

He says public relations is another issue of concerns as the management level of the ministry is considering how to provide an immediate response to media inquiries.
