Fiji NGO says interim regime needed strong message from the Forum

The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre in Fiji believes the strong message delivered by the suspension of Fiji from the Pacific Islands Forum was needed.

The Forum's move followed Fiji's failure to meet a May 1st deadline to announce an election timetable.

The deadline was unanimously agreed by other forum leaders in January.

The regime led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama has said it can't hold elections until 2014.

The director of the centre, Tupou Vere, says the return of Fiji to Parliamentary democracy must be separated from discussions of electoral reform or the People's charter.

Ms Vere says the decision shows the military government that Forum leaders are not happy.

"This decision reflects a clear insistence by Pacific Forum governments that it is important from member countries to be governed by people who are elected and not people who come to be in position of power through arms or the might or arms in the country."
