Fiji Law Society warns of imminent interim regime action against lawyers

1:08 pm on 6 May 2009

The President of the Fiji Law Society says he understands the interim government will move to weaken the position of the society and its members this week.

Dorsami Naidu says he has been told they will take action but he cannot disclose what action that might be.

He says they want to destroy the Law Society and the position of judicial officers.

"The regime is out to get at the lawyers in this country. I think they find that the lawyers are the only strong people out here, the strong society which is standing up to what is happening and have stood up from day one. And I think the regime is finding us as a huge irritant."

Dorsami Naidu says it's unfortunate that the legal advice given to the regime is not credible.
