Fiji's CCF slams release of men convicted for role in death of a teenager

The Citizens' Constitutional Forum in Fiji says the release of eight soldiers and a policeman convicted of manslaughter undermines the rule of law.

Those convicted were freed only weeks into their four-year jail sentence for their role in the 2007 death of a teenager, Sakiusa Rabaka.

Another army officer has been granted release after being sentenced in April to three years in prison for the manslaughter of Tailevu villager, Nimilote Verbasaga.

The forum's chief executive, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says the decision to release the men so soon is abhorrent.

"Manslaughter is a serious crime. Normally only those prisoners who have committed minor offences are released under CSOs. The government should explain publicly the need to release these prisoners."

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says the early release shows bias and unfair discrimination.
