Academic calls for dialogue between Muslim and Christian leaders in Solomon Islands

A religious specialist calls for more dialogue between Muslim and Christian leaders in the Solomon Islands Malaita province.

Christian churches in Malaita say conversions of former militants to Islam pose a threat to the social stability in the country.

Many of the former militants involved in the violence that ended six years ago remain unemployed and it's these people church leaders say Muslim leaders are targetting.

A professor for religious studies at Victoria University, Paul Morris, says there is a spreading of faith activity in the Solomons, which causes anxiety among the mainly Christain population.

He says more meetings between the two groups are needed.

"There may well be some particular efforts given to focusing on existing lines of ethnic divisions. What is needed, and there have been some moves in this direction, is for someone to bring these various parties together before this goes out of hand."

But Paul Morris says it's too early to panic, as the Muslim conversions are few in number.
