Samoa schools to benefit from reconditioned computers

More than ten schools in Samoa will soon benefit from free computers from New Zealand.

180 reconditioned computers are being provided by Ark Computers and its managing director, Bill Lawrence says the computers are no longer useable in New Zealand.

Mr Lawrence, whose business has links with Samoa, says he thought some schools would find the computers useful.

He says the computers will now be repaired and restored for free by students from the Manukau Institute of Technology.

He says on a recent trip to Samoa he found a number of schools were technologically disadvantaged.

Mr Lawrence says that's why they are looking at making this a sustainable activity to ensure there is ongoing support when problems arise.

"The problem is that very quickly, there is not someone there who can support them to keep them going and the computers just end up in the corner of a room, so we decided that the best way to do this is to actually use the Peace Corps because they have some skills and they have a network of people to keep it going."

Brian Lawrence says the next step will be to secure funds to send the computers to Samoa.
