Forum fisheries minister adopt new management strategy

Ministers at the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency meeting in Niue have agreed on the need to balance the management of tuna fishing with the need for the industry to be profitable.

The Ministers adopted a regional fisheries management and development strategy at the meeting and agreed to transmit it to Pacific Island leaders.

A spokesperson for the FFA, Anouk Ride, says the strategy attempts to integrate both goals.

"It recognises the fact that to really get the maximum value out of your fishery you have to have a management regime in place which is going to control fishing efforts but at the same time you have to make money from your fishing activities and other sort of processing and other activities."

Anouk Ride says the FFA Director General Su'a Tanielu highlighted how the global economic crisis has created economic pressures and a scarcity of resources that will impact on the sustainable management of tuna.
