Funeral planned for Cooks leader Sir Tangaroa

A state funeral is to be held tomorrow on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands for Sir Tangaroa Tangaroa who passed away in New Zealand this week.

He was a long serving member of Parliament for the northern island of Penrhyn and was a member of the first Legislative Assembly of the Cook Islands.

Sir Tangaroa held a number of Cabinet posts in the first Democratic Party Government which came to power in the late 1970's.

He was the first Cook Islander to be appointed to the post of Queen's Representative, a position he held from 1985 to 1990.

Sir Tangaroa was 88.
