The police in the Cook Islands say serious charges are likely to be laid in relation to the death of a New Zealand man who was hit by a truck last week.

43 year old Duncan Barrowman was in Rarotonga for a Golden Olides rugby tournament and died after being hit by a truck just after midnight on Friday.

A local man has been charged with drink driving in relation to the crash.

Inspector Akatauira Matapo says there had been an exchange of words with the local man and some of Mr Barrowman's teammates the night of the crash.

He says the man is re-appearing in court on Friday where further charges could be laid pending Mr Barrowman's post mortem results.
