From the beginning of next month, Hawaii state employees will not work on three Friday's every month.
The moves is an attempt by the administration to save the state US$688 million.
The break will not affect employees of the Department of Education, University of Hawaii, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the state Legislature and Judiciary.
But the Governor Linda Lingle said the Department of Education's budget will be cut by US$278 million and the University of Hawaii by US$107 million, which she said could be made up by layoffs or furloughs.
The affected 14,500 state workers will see their pay cheques cut by nearly 14 percent.
