American Samoa leader calls on departing cannery not to strip its plant

American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono has asked the cannery, Samoa Packing, not to remove equipment from its Atuu plant to make it easier for another business to take over.

Samoa Packing is leaving the territory in September.

The governor visited both the Samoa Packing and Star Kist Samoa plants last week to see first hand the condition of both plants and ascertain if equipment was adequate in the event other companies may want to step in.

He says the good news is that there's a lot of equipment that can be used after Samoa Packing leaves.

Togiola says this would be one less hurdle for a company that might be enticed to set up in the territory.

Samoa Packing has already dismantled and shipped some of its production equipment to Lyons, Georgia where it is setting up a new canning plant.
