Tokelau maintains swine flu protection regime

3:08 pm on 30 June 2009

People wanting to travel to Tokelau are having to wait a week in Samoa before travelling to make sure they are not infected with swine flu.

Tokelau's Director of Health, Lee Pearce, says the measure is necessary to protect a vulnerable population:

"To treat the secondary effects of H1N1 is a bit more difficult. Unlike other countries which have got the luxury of an airport, we have a 26 hour boat ride from the nearest atoll back to Samoa and a 36 hours boat ride from Atafu for example back to Samoa if something happens."

Ms Pearce says travellers have been understanding about the delay and the measures don't seem to have reduced the number of people taking the boat trip to any of Tokelau's atolls.
