Fiji people's pain prolonged by five year roadmap to elections - Dr Brij Lal

An academic says Fiji's new roadmap will prolong the suffering of the people.

Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has today said work on a new constitution will begin in three years to be ready for the 2014 election.

This is to replace the 1997 constitution, which the regime says it abrogated last April.

The Australian National University's, Dr Brij Lal, says it's an irony that on the day the Commodore has announced his road map, he has also extended the emergency regulations.

"The country, since April this year has been ruled through decrees. And this is the way it's going to be until 2014. So this is the sad part really, prolonging the suffering of the people unnecessarily."
