Police in Samoa investigate illegal sale of confiscated rice

6:49 pm on 2 July 2009

The police in Samoa have arrested four men for selling confiscated rice.

More than 1,000 bags of rice were buried after the health department considered them unfit for human consumption.

But the assistant police commissioner, Papalii Li'o, says three of the four men recovered 29 bags and sold them to several shops in the Apia town area.

Three of the men were employees of a wholesale company which had bought the shipment of rice.

Meanwhile, Papalii says environmental health officers are checking that no more bags of that rice were sold to the public.
