Fiji NGO questions need for new Women's Federation

9:04 pm on 7 July 2009

One of Fiji's women's support groups has questioned the need for a new Fiji Women's Federation.

The interim Cabinet endorsed a proposal put forward by the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation.

The Minister said the Federation would safeguard women's human rights and interest.

But Fiji already has a number of organisation working to support women and there rights.

Tthe co-ordinator of one of those groups, Shamima Ali, of the Women's Crisis Centre, said part of the reason is likely to be greater control over such NGOs:

"For us if the whole purpose is to promote gender equality and attend to woemn's rights and you know adress women's rights and so on, then we fail to see how that is possible within the political situation in the country tthe moment."
