Flash floods hit Fiji's Tailevu province

3:07 pm on 8 July 2009

Flash flooding in Fiji's Tailevu North left a bridge dislodged after parts of a road was washed away early yesterday.

The Fiji Times reports continuous downpour in the interior and eastern parts of Viti Levu forced students of Korovou Primary School to return home as Korovou Town came under threat.

Three shops in the town did not open for business while others operated under skeleton staff as employees failed to turn up to work.

Meteorology director Rajendra Prasad says low pressure is causing the rainfall.

He says the weather should clear up by next Monday.
