Guam invites Obama over transfer of marines

3:08 pm on 8 July 2009

Guam's committee chair on the military buildup, Senator Judith Guthertz, has drawn up an invitation for the US president Barack Obama to attend a conference on the military buildup in Guam.

This comes amid US plans to move 8,000 marines and their families from Okinawa in Japan to Guam by 2014.

The Pacific newscentre reports the conference will be held at the Guam legislature in November.

Ms Guthertz says the meeting will allow the people of Guam to voice their concerns about the planned relocation of the marines.

She says she hopes there will be an official representative if President Obama cannot attend.
