Hundreds of sugar cane cutters in Fiji's Lautoka will be receiving their first harvest payment tomorrow.

The Fiji Times reports the payment is made every third week after harvesting commences with the Lautoka Mill still struggling to operate at optimum rate.

Sugar Cane Growers Council general manager of operations Sundresh Chetty says the labourers are paid every third Wednesday while the farmers receive payment for harvesting on Fridays.

A local Cane cutter Sada Brij of Vitogo, Lautoka, said the labourers were looking forward to the payment, but are not expecting much because the mill has not been operating at a normal pace compared to previous years.

The Sugar Cane Growers Council chairman Jain Kumar said the council was aware of the farmers' and labourers' frustration.
