NZ opposition condemns Fiji church crackdown

2:20 pm on 24 July 2009

The New Zealand opposition Labour Party has condemned the arrest of Methodist church leaders in Fiji.

Its foreign affairs spokesperson, Chris Carter, says this is an attack on the freedom of Fijian people and will only further isolate the military rulers from the rest of the world and create more internal friction in Fiji

Mr Carter says the move is another example that Commodore Bainimarama's government is operating outside of the normal constitutional and legal

processes.
