Tonga's first fatal swine flu case is a woman who has just given birth.

The director of health for Tonga, Dr Siale Akauola, says the 26-year-old pregnant woman had been sick with flu like symptoms for about two weeks before being admitted to hospital.

He says the woman was almost at full term in her pregnancy, when she had to undergo a Caesarean due to breathing problems.

"The case was a woman, a pregnant mother who presented with a viral pneumonia and inspite of supporting treatment, she had an operation and after that she continued to struggle with the problem and eventually died."

But, Dr Akauola says the baby is doing well.

Tonga has confirmed eight people carrying the swine flu virus.
