Papua tribe claims Freeport intimidation

2:38 pm on 28 July 2009

The Papua tribe suing mining giant PT Freeport Indonesia has reported what it claims is a series of intimidations by the company to the National Commission on Human Rights, or Komnas HAM.

"The Jakarta Globe reports that a lawyer for the Amungme (a-mung-may) tribe, Titus Natkime, has told Komnas the tribe needs protection because tribespeople who filed a law suit against the company have since become recipients of menacing phone calls."

Mr Natkime says there have been many intimidating calls to his family members, with the callers saying he is breaking the law because he is a member of the OPM free West Papua movement.

A Freeport spokesperson refused to comment about the allegations.

The Amungme filed a suit in May claiming they had lost 30 billion US dollars in resources and income due to the Freeport mine.

The tribe's lands were expropriated by the Indonesian government to make way for the Freeport operations and the Amungme argue they have not had a fair share in the wealth it generates.
