The Commonwealth Secretary General says Fiji's interim regime will have to restart political dialogue with a view to elections to avoid suspension.

The interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has invited a Commonwealth delegation to Fiji for talks over the Pacific nation's position in the grouping, after it issued an ultimatum for progress towards elections by September.

Kamalesh Sharma says the Commonwealth, along with the UN, had supported the proposed President's political dialogue forum, which was to be a discussion involving people across a broad social spectrum.

"At some point it was announced that this process was being not pursued anymore, and what CMAG is saying, is that it should be revived, but with a very clear target of elections in October next year."
