Solar eclipse prompts flood of bookings in eastern French Polynesia

1:28 pm on 12 August 2009

Tourism authorities in French Polynesia say they have been inundated with bookings and inquiries for next July's solar eclipse which will affect four atolls.

According to Tahitipresse, charter flights have been organised and cruise ships will be dispatched to the area.

But the authorities say there are very limited accommodation possibilities on Anaa, Hao, Hikueru and Tatakoto.

They also say the runways can only be used by small aircraft.

There has also been a run on accommodation in Easter Islands which is among the few islands from where the 4-minute eclipse will be seen.
