The term of Vanuatu's President Kalkot Mataskelekele will end on Sunday amid signs that he may continue as the Head of State for another term.

The names of those running for office will be revealed after the Chief of Justice announces an election date next month.

The Principal Electoral Officer, Martin Tete, says there is support for the incumbent to stay on.

"I understand from the information he gave a few days ago that he has been asked by several political parties and community leaders for him to re-apply to contest the upcoming presidential election. Actually, I think most of the Vanuatu citizens, they're looking forward for him to re-apply to contest the presidential position."

President Mataskelekele has been involved in politics since 1971, and is the the first Vanuatu President with a university degree.
