Northern Marianas may get benefit from spend on volcano monitoring

The Northern Marianas could benefit from US recovery money being channelled into volcano monitoring.

The U.S. Geological Survey is planning to use fifteen million US dollars of its recovery funds to upgrade volcano monitoring and the analysis and distribution of eruption information at the five volcanic observatories.

They are Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii, California, and the network that covers the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The US Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar, says these stimulus funds will not only create or preserve jobs, but also could preserve lives by increasing protection for both residents and airline passengers flying over the eruption-prone regions.
