American Samoa to refund fine over rugby team

The American Samoa government has been told it must refund a 20,000 US dollar fine imposed on the Samoa Shipping Corporation in 2007 for bringing a school rugby team to the territory without entry permits.

The High Court has denied the government's motion for reconsideration or a new trial.

That follows its ruling in May that the Shipping Corporation never landed the rugby team in American Samoa and the fine was wrongfully imposed by government.

The court maintains that based on the evidence presented, it was Samoa Shipping that initially prevented the rugby team from exiting the vessel and not the government.
