Fiji rugby coach sacked over drinking incident

3:23 pm on 19 August 2009

Fiji's national rugby coach, Ilivasi Tabua, has been dumped by the board of the Fiji Rugby Union.

The board made the move after a recent alcohol related incident in the middle of the Pacific Nations Cup tournament in Lautoka.

The union describes Mr Tabua's behaviour as serious misconduct unbecoming of a person in his position.

The Fiji Union chairman, Bill Gavoka, says the body can never condone inappropriate behaviour.

He says the incident was serious enough to warrant termination, particularly since it occurred during a tournament in which the team rules had specifically prohibited alcohol consumption.

Mr Tabua had coached the side since January 2007.
